The term "orofacial" refers to the mouth and face, while "myofunctional" pertains to the muscles and their functions. Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a program that helps to rehabilitate and restore proper function of the face, mouth and throat muscles through neuromuscular re-training. It is a series of therapeutic exercises and techniques similar to physical therapy that can help alleviate pain, prevent or eliminate mouth breathing, aid in correcting jaw, teeth and airway development through stretches, breathing and swallowing techniques. The main goals of the therapy is to encourage proper tongue posture, lip seal, chewing/swallowing patterns, and nasal breathing.
